Overview

The user profile page is your "home page" for Commons. It contains the list of groups that you belong to, as well as a list of recent activity and content provided by you.

Profile Header

Your profile information is displayed across the top of your page. It will include your picture and the information you choose to include. When you first log in, you should be sure to edit your profile (using the 'Edit profile' tab at the top of the page) to enter in accurate information including your name, the institution(s) with which you're affiliated, your organizational role (what you actually do), your preferred email and phone number, and any additional information you're willing to share about your personal background and interests.

Your directory information on Commons can only be viewed by logged-in members of the site, limited to faculty and staff of the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities and their sponsored guests. Your contact information and info about your bio and interests (if you've provided any) will appear when you click on the user icon in the upper right.

Avatar

Your avatar (user picture) serves as a visual means to distinguish you from other members in the context of your group memberships, contributed content and comments, and also as a way for people to identify you when preparing to meet you face-to-face. Commons will provide you with an avatar out of a set of generic default avatars until you can upload a photo (any resemblance between you and the default avatar being strictly coincidental). You can add or change your photo at any time by clicking the 'Picture' tab on your profile page and uploading a file from your computer. The picture upload page will provide some tips on what makes a good profile photo. Commons strongly prefers square images.

Details

Header

The header area displays your name and basic information on the left and a user icon on the right which shows your biographic and contact information. A popup box will appear (and disappear) when you click on the user icon.

Messages

The left column will contain recent messages concerning activity in your groups. Links to people, content and groups are quickly available in this context.

Sponsored Accounts

If you have sponsored any guest users, they will be listed in a pane in the right column. You will be visually cued as accounts of sponsored users near their expiration and require re-approval.

Groups

The groups pane will contain a simple alphabetical list of the groups you have joined.

Content Contributions

Beneath the list of groups is a widget showing your own contributed content to the groups. The default listing is the content that you have published to your groups, but you can click on the tab headers to list your draft content (not yet published), or a listing of all recent content from the groups that you belong to, or the comments that you have made on other content, or a listing of your content that has been flagged by others as having a visibility issue.
