In Commons, content is displayed with context and functionality suitable to a web publication platform.

Navigation

The top of the content page (and most other pages) has clickable breadcrumbs that can be used to retrace navigation back to the originating group. If you have the ability to edit a page (either because you are the author, or because you are a member of a group and the author has allowed group edit privileges), you will also see tabs for 'View', 'Edit' and 'Revisions'.

The View Tab

The view tab is the default display for content. You can use this tab from the edit or revisions screens to return to a simple read-only view for the content. The view tab will provide additional features depending on the content type. All content pages should have the following sections:

Header

The content pane contains a header with the author's avatar, content type, title, attribution, authoring date and a collection of group tags. Clicking on the blue tag icon on the bottom line of the header will reveal the group tags form - a collection of checkboxes for group vocabulary terms that can be assigned to a content item. Checking or unchecking a box will apply that term to the content. Allow for each checkbox operation to complete before moving to the next. The list of terms in the header will be refreshed when the page is reloaded.

Indicators

A set of status indicators appears in the upper right of the content, telling the computed audience for the item, whether group members may edit it, and whether the item has been flagged for audience review or requesting feedback. Hovering over an indicator icon will provide you with an explanation of what it means, and possibly with some links to actions that might be accomplished.

Groups Listing

A list of the group or groups to which the content belongs will appear on the lower left. The group association of content has an impact on the computed audience.

Action Buttons

Action buttons appear in the lower right of the content pane. You can choose to follow a content item (receive messages), draw attention to the content's audience, request feedback or perform other actions depending on your relationship to the content (shared group, author, etc.).

Contributors (Answerers)

A list of avatars of people who have contributed to the page appears in the right sidebar column. If no one has commented on the piece, then a link to the comment form appears here.

Comments

Typically, any content type will provide you with the means to comment on the content. Comments appear at the bottom of the content pane. A content form is revealed if you click on the comment button (large green right double quote button), or if you select the link in the contributors pane (when empty).

Attachments

Document content will also provide a list of attachments under the abstract describing the purpose of the document. Clicking on the attachment link will either display the attachment content in the browser for a PDF, or download the document to your desktop workstation.

Answers

A question can have answers associated with it. Answers can be rated by users and will appear underneath the main question content ordered by the number of votes. Each individual answer may receive comments, as may the question itself. If you wish to add detail to an existing answer, use the answer comment (double quote button to lower right of the answer). To create a completely new answer, click on the lightbulb icon at the lower right of the question or select the link from the empty answerers sidebar on the right.

Books and Book Pages

Commons provides a means to structure long-form content though books and book pages. By creating and collaborating on book content, all of a team's members can contribute to the production and management of a large collection of hierarchically organized content that can be navigated serially or through a table of contents. This user manual is an example of book content.

To-Do Content

Commons provides a sophisticated To-Do List with which you can keep track of events and tasks related to your group. You can create individual tasks which need to be accomplished, and then mark them as completed as they get done.
