What is CSCU Commons?

CSCU Commons is a web-based group publishing and collaboration platform offered by the Board of Regents that serves the staff and faculty of the colleges and universities. The Commons platform provides a means to find, contribute and control the audience of web-based content and document attachments independent of institutional boundaries. Use the navigation links to the left of this page to navigate the user manual and explore the features and uses that Commons has to offer.

Publishing as a Metaphor for Organizing Information

In many mature organizations like ours, collaboration has traditionally mimicked the paper-based office: communication is through printable documents and distributed copies of memos through mail. Though this communication pattern can be effective for top-down official communication when used sparingly, modern mail’s volume, immediacy and persistence threaten to overwhelm our ability to respond and to turn important ideas and requests into elusive needles in an uncomfortably large haystack.

Commons turns away from mail and uses the concept of publication as its organizing principle.  Every item published in Commons is part of a conceptual grouping that keeps related ideas together without filing. The Commons group becomes a persistent and open collection of ideas and artifacts with a dynamic audience, focused around a specific topic, interest or project.
